One of them is Matheus Riolfi, Co-founder and CEO of Tint, a company that enables digital platforms to offer embedded insurance as a native feature. In this interview, Matheus shares his journey from spotting friction at Turo to building a new model of insurance – one that is intelligent, integrated, and designed for the digital age.
From Spark to Strategy
What inspired you to launch Tint, and what drew you personally to the opportunity within embedded insurance?
The idea for Tint started at Turo, where we faced a major challenge: insurance. Traditional
options didn’t fit our peer-to-peer model. That pain point sparked the idea – if Turo struggled,
others must too. We wanted insurance to be like payments: embedded, flexible, and invisib
when it works. Embedded insurance isn’t just a distribution model; it redefines how insurance is
designed and delivered for each platform.
Spotting the Gaps
When you were starting out, what gaps or inefficiencies in the insurance ecosystem stood out the most – and how did those shape your journey?
The system felt fundamentally misaligned with digital platforms. Legacy carriers moved too
slowly and used outdated tech. Platforms were forced to compromise or skip insurance
altogether. But over time, we realized the system isn’t broken – it just wasn’t built for today’s
needs. Now, we focus on bridging the old and the new: aligning with insurers and regulators
while customizing insurance experiences for our partners.
Shidts in the Space
How have you seen the embedded insurance space evolve over the last few years?
Embedded insurance has gone from niche to strategic. Platforms now see it as a growth lever,
not just a compliance check. Regulators are creating clearer frameworks, which opens up more
use cases. The next big leap is data- platforms have rich user data that can drive more
accurate, personalized insurance. We’re shifting from embedding insurance to embedding
intelligence.
Looking to the Horizon
How do you see embedded insurance reshaping the broader insurance landcape in the next 5 – 10 years?
Insurance will be natively integrated into user experiences – modular, personalized, and data-
driven. It will adapt to behavior, geography, and context. But getting there requires dee
collaboration across the ecosystem. The future isn’t about replacing traditional insurance—it’s
about blending its scale and trust with the agility of modern tech. We’re moving from “embedded
insurance” to “intelligent protection.”
A Global Lens on Innovation
With your global background, how has that perspective influenced how you think about innovation?
Living and working across Brazil, Europe, and the U.S. taught me that insurance is perceived
differently everywhere. That shaped our customer-first approach. We build with empathy,
knowing one-size-fits-all doesn’t work. It also taught me to value diverse viewpoints and
constructive candor—key ingredients in our company culture and product development.
Lessons from the Journey
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d received early on – and what advice do you have for others entering the space?
I wish I’d known how long it takes to earn trust in this industry. Technology alone isn’t enough –
you have to prove you understand the responsibility of protecting people. For new founders: be
patient and relentless. Don’t aim to burn everything down. Some of the best innovations com
from working within the system to improve it. And above all, surround yourself with a team that
challenges and supports you.
Final Thoughts
Tint was born out of a real-world problem – and built with a clear vision: to transform insurance
from a complex standalone product into an embedded feature that fuels growth, trust, and user
satisfaction. As embedded insurance continues to evolve, Matheus and his team are not jus
enabling platforms to offer protection – they’re reimagining the very architecture of insurance for
a more connected, data-driven future.
