Tokio Marine invests in Kita to expand carbon insurance partnership

Tokio Marine Group has made a strategic investment in Kita, the specialist carbon insurer and Lloyd's coverholder, as the two companies deepen their collaboration to support the growth and integrity of global carbon markets.

The investment builds on an existing relationship between Kita and Tokio Marine Kiln, which have already worked together to develop political risk insurance solutions for carbon credit transactions.

Under the expanded partnership, Kita will work with additional Tokio Marine Group businesses, with a particular focus on growing its presence in Japan.

As part of the collaboration, Kita is partnering with Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co. (TMNF) to develop insurance products that protect carbon credit buyers against transaction risks, including the risk that prepaid carbon credits are not delivered as agreed.

The companies will also explore providing carbon project risk assessment services using satellite-based analytics to help evaluate project risks and improve confidence in carbon credit markets.

TMNF plans to combine these capabilities with the carbon project support services offered through Nippon Koei, the engineering consultancy within the Tokio Marine Group. These services include field assessments, project design, due diligence and implementation support.

Together, the companies aim to develop an integrated offering covering the full carbon project lifecycle, from early-stage project screening and investment assessments to ongoing support for carbon credit generation and project delivery.

The partnership reflects growing demand for specialist insurance and risk management solutions as voluntary and compliance carbon markets continue to mature. By combining insurance products with project assessment and engineering expertise, Tokio Marine and Kita aim to reduce transaction risks and improve confidence among carbon credit buyers and investors.
