About Huynh
Huynh Thanh Phong is the Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of FWD Group, a pan-Asian life insurance business with a vision of changing the way people feel about insurance. Phong was appointed to this position soon after the company’s establishment in 2013.
As Group Chief Executive Officer, Phong leads the Group’s strategic development to create value for customers and other stakeholders with innovative propositions and easy-to-understand products, supported by digital technology. He also holds various positions on the boards of FWD Group entities.
Phong has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry spanning North America, Asia and the Middle East. He has held a number of senior management positions in leading multinational insurance and financial services companies. This includes roles such as Regional Chief Executive for the AIA Group from 2010-2013, Executive Vice President for Insurance for Fullerton Financial Holdings (a wholly owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings) from 2009-2010 and various senior-level positions during 12 years at Prudential plc. This included the founding Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Vietnam and Managing Director for Prudential Corporation Asia managing its operations in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Phong started his career in Canada with Crown Life and later moved to Manulife Financial, where he was appointed as Manulife’s Appointed Actuary for the Greater China Region in 1992.
Phong is a qualified actuary and a fellow of the Society of Actuaries (USA). He was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 in recognition of his contribution in promoting UK financial services in Vietnam. Phong holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Alberta, Canada in 1986.
