The deal secures 17,500 tons of carbon removal and supports the commercial-scale deployment of Nellie’s bioengineered CO₂ removal system.
Following three years of development, this agreement represents Nellie’s first major offtake deal, signaling the scalability and commercial viability of its carbon removal technology. The system produces biomass that captures CO₂, which is then converted into biochar for use in UK agriculture, providing both environmental and economic benefits.
Nellie’s system produces biomass that absorbs CO2 as it grows, then converts it into biochar for use in UK agriculture. “Our operational system boundary allows us near-total control over the removal and sequestration process,” Nellie said in a statement about the partnership.
Zurich’s collaboration with Nellie aligns with its broader climate action strategy, emphasizing both emissions reduction and verified carbon sequestration.
Zurich’s commitment aligns with Nellie’s vision of carbon removal as a last resort. “Removing CO2 should only happen when an organization has done all it can to prevent their emissions in the first place. And this is what’s happening here,” Nellie stated.
