Zurich and YAS Launch AI-Driven Insurance Program for Hong Kong Taxi Drivers
Zurich Insurance Hong Kong has partnered with YAS Insurance to introduce a new insurance program tailored for electric and hybrid taxi drivers in the city. The initiative harnesses YAS’s AI-powered TAXY platform to monitor driving behaviour and reward safe practices, with the aim of raising safety and operational standards across Hong Kong’s taxi sector.

The program is structured in three tiers, each tied to a driver’s safety performance as measured by the TAXY platform. Using artificial intelligence, the system analyses driving patterns with data captured from in-vehicle cameras and a mobile application. It also integrates local traffic data, offering real-time alerts and route optimisation to help drivers avoid high-risk areas.

Participants receive personal accident coverage, with additional benefits for those who achieve higher safety scores. Depending on the tier, these benefits may extend to personal property protection and enhanced accident coverage for family members. The structure is designed to incentivise safer driving habits, ultimately reducing accidents and improving road safety for passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists.

Over a six-month trial, the TAXY platform processed more than 39 million data points, including driver behaviour, road conditions, and weather patterns. Zurich and YAS reported a measurable improvement in safety scores among drivers engaged in the program.

Eric Hui, CEO of Zurich Insurance Greater China, said taxis remain essential in connecting communities and sustaining Hong Kong’s economy. “Our partnership with YAS Insurance is intended to support taxi drivers with protection that meets their needs while contributing to a more resilient transport system,” he commented.

William Lee, co-founder of YAS, emphasised the company’s mission to improve safety for taxi drivers and passengers by using real-time data and risk analysis. “Partnering with Zurich allows us to raise service standards, improve fleet efficiency, and bring greater peace of mind on the roads. This program will keep evolving, with new incentives, rewards, and partnerships – from e-commerce to electric charging – to strengthen the entire taxi ecosystem and set the stage for wider adoption,” he said.

Alongside its efforts in Hong Kong, Zurich Malaysia has launched Z-Driver EV Protect, a new insurance and takaful product specifically designed for electric vehicle owners.

The solution extends beyond conventional motor insurance to cover EV-specific risks such as battery protection, home charging equipment, and portable charging accessories. Optional benefits include coverage for home chargers of up to RM15,000, portable cables of up to RM2,000, and personal liability during charging of up to RM50,000. Additional features include a compassionate allowance for incidents at public charging stations and optional protection against battery damage caused by water ingress. Premiums for the package start at RM120.

Z-Driver EV Protect complements Zurich’s existing motor solutions, which already include unlimited towing for battery depletion. To support the broader EV ecosystem, Zurich has also partnered with Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd to help expand Malaysia’s charging infrastructure. Zurich branding will be featured at 13 charging stations in high-profile locations such as Suria KLCC, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, and KLIA2 Gateway.

Together, these initiatives highlight Zurich’s growing focus on sustainable mobility and innovative insurance solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of drivers in Asia.
