Feather Launches Car Insurance for Expats in Europe
Berlin-based insurtech startup Feather has announced the launch of its Car Insurance offering, aimed at simplifying the process of obtaining coverage for expats across Europe. The fully digital solution enables customers to secure car insurance in under three minutes, entirely online, in English, and with instant proof of coverage.

The product is now available in Spain, France and Germany, three of Europe’s largest auto markets. By partnering with leading insurers including Allianz, Helvetia and VHV, Feather has created a seamless digital journey for policyholders, from sign-up to policy management. Customers can purchase, manage and update their coverage entirely online without facing the traditional bureaucracy and language barriers of local systems.

Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather, said that the company developed the product to remove friction for expats who often find buying car insurance one of the most difficult aspects of relocating to Europe. “In just three minutes, anyone can get reliable coverage in their own language, backed by trusted partners,” he explained.

He added that while car insurance is a mandatory and massive market, it has not kept up with consumer expectations. “People want speed, clarity and transparency. That’s exactly what Feather delivers,” Schumacher said. He emphasised the company’s expat-first approach, noting that digital-first platforms such as Feather can resolve issues of complexity, language and local regulation.

The launch comes as the European motor insurance market continues to grow. According to Statista, the sector is projected to reach €175.69 billion in 2025, with per capita spending exceeding €208. By 2029, it is expected to surpass €183 billion. Longer-term forecasts suggest that Europe’s motor insurance market could nearly double to $490 billion by 2034, driven by rising car sales, higher pricing and increasing consumer demand for digital solutions.

At the same time, the broader digital insurance market in Europe is valued at $128 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow by 33.5 per cent annually through 2030. Nearly half of consumers now consider digital to be the natural way to buy insurance, while more than 80 per cent expect policies to be embedded directly within apps and websites.

Feather’s entry into car insurance follows a series of expansion moves. In 2024, the company raised $6 million to accelerate its European operations and appointed Eloi Lanthiez and Jaime Sans Alvarez to oversee business in France and Spain. Originally founded in Germany, the company has expanded its portfolio to include health, liability, business and now motor insurance, all tailored specifically to the needs of expatriates.

“Launching car insurance is the natural next step in our mission to reinvent insurance for the modern age,” Schumacher concluded. “It strengthens our position as the go-to digital insurance provider for expats in Europe.”

With this step, Feather aims to continue making insurance simple, fast and human-centred, transforming one of the most complex industries into a service that supports people at every stage of their journey abroad.
